Looking for a fun and authentic way to experience rural Japan this autumn? Why not spend a relaxing day picking fresh mandarin oranges in Usuki, Oita Prefecture?

Surrounded by the beautiful Japanese countryside, this seasonal activity offers a wonderful opportunity to enjoy the simple pleasures of autumn: sunshine, fresh air, and delicious fruit picked straight from the tree.

Pick, Peel, and Taste Fresh Mandarins

Mandarin oranges, known as mikan in Japanese, are one of Japan’s most beloved winter fruits. Sweet, juicy, and easy to peel.

At Mirai Farm, you can experience the joy of harvesting your own mandarins and tasting them right where they grow. During your visit, you can enjoy all-you-can-eat mandarin oranges for approximately 30 minutes.

It’s a lovely activity for families, couples, friends, and anyone who wants to discover a more hands-on side of Japanese food culture.

How to Find the Sweetest Mandarins

Want to find the sweetest fruit on the tree? Here are three tips to help you choose!

  • Look for small, firm mandarins. Choose fruit with thin skin that feels snug against the flesh.

  • Choose a deep orange color. Mandarins with a rich orange hue and a small stem are good ones to look for.

  • Look up toward the sunny branches. Fruit growing on higher branches that receive plenty of sunlight is worth checking out.

Take Your Favorite Mandarins Home

Found some particularly delicious mandarins? You can take home the fruit you pick for JPY300 per kilogram.

You can also arrange nationwide shipping within Japan, making it possible to share a taste of Usuki with family and friends elsewhere in the country.
