On May 3, nearly six months after the devastating fire that struck Hatcho-Oji Street in Usuki City, the community came together in a heartfelt celebration of recovery, resilience, and unity. The Hatcho-Oji Fukko Music Festival was held as a symbolic first step toward rebuilding—not just structures, but the spirit of a neighborhood deeply loved by its residents.
The word “Fukko” blends two meanings: “fuku” (blessing) and “ko” (happiness or recovery)—expressing the wish to share hope and healing through the universal language of music.
The festival featured an impressive lineup of performances by artists with roots in Usuki, filling the historic street with vibrant sounds and joyful energy for an entire day. From traditional taiko drumming and choral performances to dance, classical guitar, piano, and flute, each performance resonated with gratitude and determination.
As a highlight of the event, the crowd joined in a moving group performance of “Pioneer Usuki Song,” a song written just three days after the fire, dedicated to the recovery of Hatcho-Oji. This shared moment of song reminded everyone present that true recovery begins in the heart, and in the bonds we share.

In tandem with the music festival, the “Nobori-Ichi” street market was also held, bringing together delicious food trucks and popular vendors from within and outside the city. The vibrant market atmosphere brought even more smiles to the street, turning a once-devastated space into one filled with life and possibility.
This year’s festival venue was located exactly where the fire occurred in November 2023. Holding the event here was a deliberate and powerful gesture—showing that, while scars remain, the community is ready to move forward.
United by hope, music, and shared memories, the people of Usuki are determined to make Hatcho-Oji even more lively and welcoming than before. The Fukukō Music Festival is not just a moment of joy—it is the beginning of a new chapter.
