A Celebration of Calligraphy in Usuki

From January 10 to 12, 2026, the Usuki Civic Hall hosted a captivating calligraphy exhibition presented by the Otsuka Shodo (Calligraphy) Classroom. The event featured approximately 100 works created by students of all ages, offering visitors a glimpse into the expressive world of Japanese calligraphy. The exhibition aimed to share the beauty and depth of this traditional art form with a broader audience.

The Vision of Seiho Otsuka

At the heart of the exhibition is Seiho Otsuka, a renowned contemporary calligrapher born and based in Usuki, Oita Prefecture. A disciple of the celebrated Order of Culture recipient Mishima Murakami, Otsuka has dedicated his life to promoting the power of calligraphy. Having overcome childhood polio, he channels his personal journey into bold, expressive works that have earned him recognition as one of Oita’s leading calligraphers.

A Classroom for All Generations

The Otsuka Shodo Classroom welcomes students from elementary school children to seniors, offering instruction in a wide range of styles—from penmanship and brush writing to kanji, kana, and practical calligraphy. The exhibition reflected this diversity, with each piece revealing the unique spirit and growth of its creator.

Calligraphy: More Than Beautiful Writing

Japanese calligraphy, or shodō, is a visual art that transcends mere penmanship. Originating in China and introduced to Japan in the 6th century, it emphasizes not only the form of characters but also the rhythm, pressure, and flow of brushstrokes. Unlike shūji (penmanship), shodō is a path of self-cultivation, expressing the writer’s inner world through ink, brush, and paper.

In today’s digital age, the act of writing by hand offers rare and meaningful benefits. Practicing calligraphy enhances concentration, emotional sensitivity, posture, and cultural literacy. It also provides a sense of achievement and serves as a lifelong creative outlet. Whether for personal growth or practical use, calligraphy enriches both mind and spirit.
