A Sacred Shrine with Ise Connections
At the top of the gorge stands a small mountaintop shrine. For the people of Usuki who were unable to make the long journey to Ise Jingu—one of Japan’s most revered shrines—a divided spirit of Toyouke-Ōkami, the deity of Ise’s Outer Shrine, was enshrined at the highest point of the valley. The stone bridges, the approach to the sanctuary, and the surrounding landscape were all carefully designed to echo the sacred atmosphere of Ise, creating a place of quiet reverence and spiritual reflection.
