On October 26th, a Kicchomu storytelling performance was held at the Notsu Multigenerational Exchange Center “Notsu-terrace.”

The tales of Kicchomu-san—a legendary figure from Usuki known for his wit and warmth—filled the venue with laughter, applause, and nostalgic charm. Listening to the stories, one could feel how deeply his clever spirit and gentle heart continue to live on in the people of Usuki.

Kicchomu-san was a real person who lived around the 17th century in the countryside of what is now Usuki City. His real name was Hirota Kichiemon, and he came from a distinguished family that served for generations as village headmen and were granted the privilege of bearing a surname and sword. Although often remembered today for his humorous and clever tales, the historical Kicchomu was also a compassionate leader who stood by the common people, helping them navigate the hardships of heavy taxation and offering wise counsel during difficult times. In many ways, he was a pillar of the Notsu community.

Even today, his stories are passed down as lessons in wisdom, humor, and humanity. The presence of places like Kicchomu Land, Kicchomu-no-Sato ("Kicchomu's hometown"), and even his gravesite in Notsu speaks volumes about how deeply cherished he remains among the local community. His legacy is not only preserved in stories, but also in the very landscape of Usuki.

To ensure these tales continue to inspire future generations, a unique “Kicchomu Karte” has been created. Borrowing the concept of a medical chart, this playful archive records each story like a case study—highlighting his cleverness, compassion, and the cultural values woven into each anecdote. It’s a charming and thoughtful way to keep his spirit alive, one story at a time.

Three Famous Stories of Kicchomu-san

★The Straw Raincoat and the Debt★

One day, a merchant came to collect a debt from Kicchomu-san.

He said calmly, “I can’t pay you today, but take this straw raincoat — it’s worth more than money, it’ll protect you from any rain.”

The merchant accepted, but soon after, the sun shone bright for weeks!

People laughed seeing him sweating under the straw raincoat, saying,

“Ah, Kicchomu-san fooled him again!”

Moral: Wisdom often shines brighter than wealth.

★The Fake Gold Coin★

A greedy man once boasted about his gold coins in front of Kicchomu-san.

So Kicchomu made a coin out of mud, painted it gold, and traded it for the man’s chicken.

When the man realized he’d been tricked, Kicchomu said,

“Well, your greed was the true mud!”

Moral: Greed blinds us faster than any trick.

★The Talking Rice Bag★

A neighbor accused Kicchomu-san of stealing his rice.

Kicchomu said, “Then let’s ask the rice bag itself!”

He tapped the bag and said, “If you came from my house, speak up!”

The neighbor burst out laughing and apologized for the false suspicion.

Moral: A good laugh can settle even serious matters.
