In the spring of 1600, the Dutch ship Liefde drifted ashore near Usuki after an extraordinary voyage across the world. Among the survivors were Dutch sailor Jan Joosten and English navigator William Adams, later known as Miura Anjin, who became the first English samurai and a trusted advisor to Tokugawa Ieyasu.
More than 400 years later, this historic connection is still honored. Each year, Usuki hosts the Liefde Commemoration Ceremony, attended by representatives from Japan, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom—celebrating a friendship born from a dramatic encounter at sea.
