The Tairyo Festival took place yesterday in Fukae, a charming coastal district of Usuki City. This beloved local event celebrates the bounty of the sea and brings together people of all ages to enjoy a festive day filled with fun and flavor.
Colorful “tairyo-bata” flags waved high above the grounds, creating a festive and vibrant backdrop.
The atmosphere was lively and full of excitement, especially around the children’s fish-catching zone, where kids eagerly chased after slippery, wriggling fish. Their laughter, shouts, and determined efforts to grab a fish with their bare hands were met with enthusiastic cheers and encouragement from parents and onlookers, creating heartwarming scenes of family joy.
A fishing pond experience allowed participants of all ages to try their hand at catching fish—those lucky enough to reel one in lit up with pure delight.
Younger children also enjoyed a touch-and-feel zone, where they could safely interact with live sea creatures—an unforgettable hands-on experience.
The festival also featured a lively food and drink area, offering a wide range of delicious local seafood dishes. Long lines formed in front of the most popular food stands. A stand offered visitors the chance to fill a bag with dried fish and seafood for just 500 yen—a fun and flavorful souvenir!

Adding to the festival’s charm was a giant turtle slowly strolling through the venue. Children gathered around it with wide eyes and gentle hands, petting it with fascination and affection. It became an unexpected star of the day.

Live performances by local bands brought rhythm and energy to the coastal celebration, making the entire event feel like a joyous tribute to the sea, the community, and shared memories.
The Tairyo Festival offered not only fun but a deep sense of connection to the sea and community—a day to remember for everyone who joined.
