A Joyful Return of Usuki Bowl Season Kickoff Party

On September 12, 2025, the Kuge no Okura in Usuki came alive with the long-awaited return of the Usuki Bowl Season Kickoff Party, held for the first time in seven years. This lively celebration marked the beginning of the Usuki Bowl season—a unique local tradition that blends community spirit with regional flavor.

What Is the Usuki Bowl?

The Usuki Bowl is both a drink and a style of serving: a large donburi bowl filled with ice and fresh kabosu citrus, topped with Tsunezo, a barley shōchū brewed by Kuge Honten. Guests scoop the drink with ladles and share it together, creating a festive, interactive experience. The refreshing aroma of barley, the vivid oils from kabosu peel, and its sharp citrus juice combine beautifully in the bowl, pairing perfectly with local favorites like toriten (Oita-style chicken tempura) and karaage.

A Unique Collaboration with ANA

This year’s event was held in collaboration with the ANA Oita Branch, featuring three types of ANA international economy-class meals, three selections from ANA FINDELISH “Aogumi” – sky-themed gummy candies, and snacks from Sanpomichi—all served alongside Usuki Bowl and completely sold out.

The circle of Usuki Bowl enthusiasts grows wider

Local Usuki Bowl Meisters demonstrated how to prepare the drink, and guests who had attended similar events more than three times were certified as new Meisters. The circle of Usuki Bowl enthusiasts seemed to grow wider with each toast.

After enjoying the festivities at Kuge no Ōkura, guests spilled out into the streets of Usuki, their laughter and lively conversations echoing through the old castle town, bringing a cheerful buzz to the evening.
