Today marks the annual Usuki Stone Buddha Fire Festival, held at the site of Japan’s only National Treasure stone Buddhas.

Starting at 5:00 PM, visitors enjoyed free kabosu citrus giveaways and local shochu with kabosu tastings. At 6:00 PM, the beloved local mascot “Hotto-san” hosted a lively rock-paper-scissors game for all kids. At 6:30 PM, a Buddhist memorial service was held in front of the Buddhas, followed by a taiko drum performance at 7:15 PM.

Right after the performance, the highlight of the evening began—1,000 torches and bonfires were lit around the Stone Buddha site. The flickering flames illuminated the serene faces of the stone Buddhas, creating a breathtaking and spiritual atmosphere. The glowing firelight reflected a dreamlike vision of the Pure Land, evoking deep gratitude for the Usuki Stone Buddhas who have watched over the city for nearly a thousand years.

This festival has its roots in local traditions such as “mushi-okuri” (insect-sending rituals), prayers for a good harvest, and Jizo festivals honoring guardian deities. It draws not only residents, but also many visitors from outside the city.

If you ever have the chance, come witness this mystical night where fire, history, and community come together at the foot of the ancient carvings.
