Commemorating Yaeko Nogami’s Literary Legacy
From October 16 to 19, Musica Theatre will present a theatrical adaptation of Kaijinmaru at Kuge no Okura in Usuki City, commemorating the 140th anniversary of renowned local author Yaeko Nogami.
Kaijinmaru: A Journey Through Crisis and Conscience
Based on a real maritime tragedy involving a ship that departed from Usuki’s Shitanoe Port, Kaijinmaru follows a crew stranded at sea, stripped of food, water, and certainty. Nogami’s writing captures the psychological breakdown of individuals pushed beyond their limits. Although fictional, the story is rooted in actual events, and its themes— human endurance, moral collapse, the dignity of life, and the power of belief—remain strikingly relevant today.
Musica Theatre: Art Rooted in Usuki
Founded in 2021 by the late director Toshi Shioya, a native of Usuki, Musica Theatre carries forward his vision of theater as a force to nurture imagination and strengthen community ties. Guided by the belief that “Art can change the world,” the troupe has explored questions of identity, loss, and resilience through works such as ANJIN, Pass Cure, Gold in the Dust, and Liberation Zone—each deeply connected to Usuki’s cultural and historical landscape.
Experience the Power of Local Storytelling on Stage
Musica Theatre enriches the cultural life of Usuki’s residents through locally rooted performances that invite reflection and spark imagination. Their presence adds depth to the city’s artistic landscape, and their unwavering commitment to honoring local stories and fostering meaningful dialogue makes them an essential part of the region’s cultural heartbeat.
