Usuki City is ready to welcome visitors with an exciting lineup of Golden Week 2025 events, blending history, culture, and local charm into unforgettable experiences. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or a foodie, Usuki has something special for you!


★Celebrate Usuki Castle’s Historic Recognition

Step into the past at Usuki Castle, a fortress built 470 years ago by the Christian daimyo Ōtomo Sōrin. Recently designated as a National Historic Site, the castle grounds will host exclusive events on May 4 (Sun):


  • Special Opening of Tatami Turret & Utoraguchi Gate Turret – A rare chance to explore these historic structures. (10:00-16:00.)

  • Guided Tour of Usuki Castle – Discover the castle’s fascinating evolution from medieval stronghold to Edo-period domain. (10:00-11:00, 14:00-15:00.)

  • Bungo Ōtomo Sōrin Gun Squad Performance – Witness a thrilling matchlock rifle and cannon demonstration, recreating the legendary “Kunikuzushi” cannon. (10:00-11:30, 13:00-14:00.)



★Relax at the Limited-Time Japanese Garden Café

Indulge in handmade cakes and aromatic coffee at the Japanese Garden Café, set in the former lower residence of the Usuki feudal lords. Open on May 3 (Sat) – May 5 (Mon), this serene retreat offers a pet-friendly atmosphere and live jazz guitar performances only on May 3 (Sat).


Location : The Former Lower Residence and Garden of Inaba Family, Lords of the Usuki Domain

Time : 10:30-15:00

Event : Only on May 3 (Live performance of jazz guitar)

Others : An additional admission of 330 yen is required, if you wish to enjoy food or drinks inside the Lower Residence and Garden. (Admission is free for Usuki residents.)



★Explore Usuki’s Resilient Castle Town

Join the Usuki Castle Town Recovery Walk on April 29 (Tue), where expert guides will lead you through the city’s historic streets and area affected by the devastating fire in November 2024. You will have the opportunity to hear firsthand stories of disaster preparedness and fire recovery from those affected.


Reception : Usuki Tourism Information Plaza

Time : 10:00-11:30, 13:30-15:00

Admission : 500 yen per adult. Two elementary school children may enter free with each paying adult.



★Celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Usuki Stone Buddhas!

The Usuki Stone Buddhas, designated as a National Treasure in June 1995, hold the distinction of being the first rock-carved Buddhist statues in Japan to receive such recognition. This year marks the 30th anniversary of their designation, and visitors can enjoy special limited-time benefits—the first 100 guests each day will receive a commemorative gift!


  • Quiz Rally: Join the fun quiz rally as you explore the Usuki Stone Buddhas! Search for 25 hidden "Hotto-san" statues along the path and solve the quiz challenge. Drop your answer into the box next to the ticket booth, and 20 lucky winners will receive a special local Usuki prize worth ¥3,000!

    • Location: Usuki Stone Buddhas

  • Guided Tour: Take a guided tour of Usuki’s National Treasure with local experts, who will share fascinating stories about these ancient carvings. Learn about their historical and cultural significance, hear unique insights that can’t be found anywhere else, and immerse yourself in the beauty of this sacred site.

    • Date: May 4 (Sun)

    • Time: 10:30 – 11:30 (Registration starts 30 minutes prior.)

    • Location: Usuki Stone Buddhas

    • Entry Fee: Free (Separate admission fee required, but Usuki residents enter for free.)

    • Special Participation Gift: Usuki Senbei (rice crackers) & prayer incense

★Enjoy Music Festival at Hatcho-Oji Street

On May 3 (Sat), the Hatcho-Oji Street Festival will bring live music and vibrant performances to Usuki’s historic shopping district. This music festival is held to show Usuki citizen's commitment to preserving the historical and cultural heritage and further revitalizing and developing the city center.

Admission : Free
